Kon Kelei: “All children were forced to join the rebels at the age of four”
Meet Kon. He became a child soldier in the Sudan People’s Liberation Army at age five.
He escaped to Khartoum and paid human traffickers to get him to Holland.
He has since returned to Sudan, and will be attending Dalhousie University, Halifax, in the fall of 2011.
Quotes from the interview:
“All children were forced to [join the SPLA] at the age of four until 12.”
“The SPLA is different than other rebel groups…we were not forced to burn down villages, kill people, rape…”
“I was full of guilt…I was full of self-blame.”
“I did not leave because I hate Sudan – I left for my studies.”
“I have to come back to Sudan.”
